Creating and Adding a Channel Agent

For existing channels, users can navigate to the desired channel, click on the “Open agents and bots” icon typically found in the upper right-hand corner, and then select “Add an agent to this channel.” A confirmation prompt will appear, after which the agent is created and adopts the channel’s name.

However, access to meetings is restricted to channel members who have full access to the meeting’s chat history, with standard organizer, co-organizer, and presenter restrictions applying.

In group chats, users can also invite the Channel Agent. While the agent does not absorb new chat messages in these contexts, members can still ask it questions, and it will respond using its established knowledge base.

Information Access and Knowledge Management

The Channel Agent’s effectiveness is rooted in its ability to access and process information from various sources. By default, messages within the channel where the agent is created form its primary knowledge base. This includes channel conversations and, with recent enhancements, files stored in the channel’s SharePoint folder.

The agent can also draw information from approved meeting transcripts, which are added to its knowledge base after review. If permitted by the organization’s IT admin, the Channel Agent can also perform web searches to supplement its knowledge and answer a wider range of queries.

However, there are limitations to its data access. Channel Agent does not ingest messages from group chats into its knowledge base, nor does it access files shared via links or those outside the specific channel’s SharePoint. The agent also adheres to user permissions, meaning it will not use file content to answer a question if the requesting user does not have access to that file.

Security, Compliance, and Privacy

Microsoft emphasizes that Channel Agents, along with Teams channels and Microsoft Copilot, are built upon a robust framework of security, compliance, and privacy. The Channel Agent adheres to the App compliance model for various actions, including adding or removing agents from channels, chats, or meetings, and for bot messages.

It’s important to note that data from preview features may be processed outside of EU Data Boundaries. Additionally, certain advanced configurations, such as tenants using Customer Key, are not currently supported by the Channel Agent.
